Pemayangtse Monastery

Pemayangtse Monastery is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Sikkim. This monastery which is positioned at an elevated point of 6840 feet was constructed by Lama Lhatsun Chempo during the 17th century. This monastery was initially small in size and later revamped by Jigme Pawo, who was believed to be the third renascence of Lhatsun Chempo.

Situated at the hilltop in the western district of Sikkim, the location of the monastery marks the starting point of the popular trek course of Dzongri. About as long as 46 kilometers, the Dzongri trek course is recognized as the most prominent trek route in Sikkim. One can clearly view Mount Khangchendzonga from this monastery.

The Pemayangtse Monastery was primarily established for the purest monks or ta-sang lamas. It gradually flourished and began serving different communities. The monastery is famous for housing a wide range of Buddist idols, sculptures, scriptures, and antiques. There is a gorgeous wooden carving of Sanghthokpalr placed on the first floor of the monastery.

Chaam, also called the annual monk dance is a festival celebrated on the 12th month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. On this occasion, the lamas dress up in dazzling outfits to resemble the Guru Drag-dmar and Mahakala. The festival finishes on the third day which is when Ghyo-Ku, a gigantic embellished Buddhist scroll is revealed.

Rabdengtse Ruins

Rabdengtse Ruins is another fantastic attraction to visit in Pelling. You can head for this attraction right from the Pemayangtse Monastery as it is only a walking distance away from there. Rabdentse Ruins is the archaeological site and it was the second capital of Sikkim, established by the Chogyal II. Surrounded by dense bushes, the Rabdengtse Ruins are regarded as one of the popular destinations among tourists.

Sewaro Rock Garden

The Sewaro Rock Garden is built and preserved by the tourism department of Sikkim. The garden mainly consists of pools, gardens, zigzag pathways, rocks among various other recreational facilities such as cafeterias, beautiful viewpoints, and swimming pools. People from schools and various communities throng this popular picnic spot every day.

Changey Waterfall

Changey Waterfall is situated about 10 kilometers from Pelling. This waterfall which is located at a height of around 300 meters travels all the way to Dentam Valley. While descending, the falls amazingly disappear into the boundless greenery. Owing to the whiteness of the waterfall, it gives the semblance of a huge white line with the green vegetation as the backdrop.
