The Jaisalmer Desert Festival is an annual affair that takes place in the month of February in the beautiful city Jaisalmer. It is also known as Marwar Festival. The festival showcases a colourful extravaganza of the art, music, and culture of Rajasthan. There is a number of festivals celebrated in Jaisalmer but the most famous festival is the Desert festival. It is celebrated in the sand dunes of the Thar Desert which is approx 42 km from Jaisalmer. During three days of the festival, this lonely place comes to life and brings colours, enthusiasm, and happiness. It also gives a message of the revitalization of local arts and folk music together.
Highlights of Jaisalmer Desert Festival
Desert festival begins with a formal procession known as Shobha Yatra. Local Rajputs and other kin dress up in their traditional attire. Groups of local Kalabaz (Nomads) perform their gymnastic acts, Gair and the fire dance. One can witness traditional sports games such as camel polo, camel races, and tug of war. Apart from these, other interesting competitions are turban tying and competition for the longest moustaches. Both the turban and the moustaches have been centuries-old symbols of pride for the people of Rajasthan. Apart from these sports one can also enjoy Maru Shree (Mr. Desert) competition. Enjoy amazing performances of folk music by the people of Bhopa’s Langhas and Manganiars communities.
Lots of effort go into dressing the camels who are going to participate in the competitions for the best-decorated camel. Camel owners compete with each other for winning competitions. Rajasthani Folk Concert is the main highlight of this festival followed by an Air Force display, parachuting, and a cricket match. Experience the fusion of folklore, culture, dance, music, traditional competitions and many other things. This festival attracts local people and domestic and international travellers.
